Kitchen drawer storage hacks

Keeping your kitchen neat and tidy can be overwhelming with so many gadgets and gizmos available. That’s why we’ve come up with some top kitchen drawer storage hacks, to help you make the most of your drawers even more effectively.

Tension Rods

You can use tension rods to store awkward items, keeping them neatly in place within your drawers – no more scrabbling for the right baking tray.

  • Tupperware lids: Use a tension rod to keep all the lids from your Tupperware and sandwich boxes standing upright, neatly arranged at one end of the drawer with the boxes at the other
  • Trays and cutting boards: Place tension rods across a deep drawer to create compartments for baking trays, cutting boards, and trays.
  • Utensils: Got awkward long utensils that keep getting stuck in your drawers? Add a tension rod to a deep drawer and use S-hooks to hang them instead.

Stacking things upright with tension rods saves plenty of space for other important items, and it means you can see everything at a glance instead of having to dig through a drawer.

Space Saving Hacks

When you’re working with a smaller kitchen space, using all of the space available to you is really important. Here are a few hacks for getting a bit of extra storage space out of your kitchen drawers.

  • Individual trays: Drawer organisers are great, but they don’t always fit every kind of drawer. Instead of having items rattling around loose in a drawer, use individual plastic trays for awkwardly sized drawers
  • Peg boards: if you really can’t find any organisers or trays to help organise your kitchen drawers, use a peg board with large vertical wooden pegs – it can be completely customised to fit exactly what you have in your drawers, helping you to maximise on space.
Spice Drawer

Instead of keeping spices in a rack or taking up space in a cupboard, store them in a drawer, face up. This means that you can see all the spice labels and find what you need quickly and easily. If you have a drawer close to your hob, even better – it keeps everything within arm’s reach while you’re cooking.

Pet Drawer

Pets are as much a member of the family as anyone else – but in most homes, they usually don’t have their own room. That means finding a home for their stuff can be tricky, but not with our kitchen drawer storage hacks for your pet’s essentials!

Pet food station

Keep everything you need in one easy and convenient location with a pet food station drawer. Ideally, this will be close to their food and water bowls, to keep things convenient.

Here’s what you could be keeping in your pet food station:

  • Keep pouches of treats and snacks stacked vertically to save space
  • Keep any medications and supplements neatly stacked in a box in the drawer. If your pet is taking anything daily, use a (human) pill organiser marked with the days of the week to make sure you’re keeping up to date with their routine.
  • If you have a pull-out bin drawer in your kitchen, swap the trash bin for a large container, and keep dry cat or dog food in here with a scoop. If your pet is crafty enough to get a drawer open, add a childproof lock to keep those snacking snouts out until it’s dinner time!
Walkies drawer

Find yourself fumbling for leads, waste bags, balls and dog toys as you’re heading out the door? Keep your hallway or front door space clear. Instead, keep everything neatly organised in a kitchen drawer, so you know where everything is kept when you’re on the way out for walkies. Keeping everything near the kitchen sink also makes clean-up easier when you get back home.

Baby drawers

While you might have some storage space in a nursery or baby’s room, keeping your baby’s essential items in the kitchen means that they’re in a convenient and easy to reach place when you’re going about your busy day. Here are some kitchen storage ideas for maximising storage with baby drawers in your kitchen.

Sanitation station

Keep things clean and hygienic with a baby sanitation station, containing everything you need to keep baby bottles clean. Keep your bottles, spare bottle nipples, brushes, and spare soap in a drawer near the sink, as well as antibacterial wipes for spills and accidents.

Baby tableware drawer

Instead of mixing baby bowls and little plastic plates in with your own tableware, keep everything in a dedicated drawer, using some of our kitchen drawer hacks above! Smaller plastic items like cutlery can go in little clear plastic bins, so they’re easy to find. If you can, pick a drawer close to the floor – as your little one grows, they can start get used to getting their own tableware out of the drawer ready for dinner.

Mealtime drawer

When your baby is hungry, the last thing you want is to be rifling through cupboards and cabinets for a bib or the baby food. Keep baby bibs, burping cloths, and washcloths ready to go in a drawer, near where you’re keeping baby’s food if possible. You could also keep dummies in a small container in the same place. And again, a pack of antibacterial wipes for keeping eating surfaces clear and cleaning spills would probably be a good addition to keep within reach!
