How to Create a Mood Board

A mood board is a collection of images, color, textures and patterns that inspire you – this can be anything from a picture clipped from a magazine to photos taken when you’re out and about. It’s a brilliant tool to help you discover your own sense of style, as well as being a great way to help others understand your ideas.

Regardless of how creative you are, don’t be intimidated by the concept of a mood board. In reality, they are simply a collection of things you like and things that inspire you. Through collecting these images you will start to see patterns in your choices, which will help you to realize your own style. If you generally struggle to pinpoint your style then a mood board is a good way to help you focus your ideas – think of it as your personal scrapbook of design inspiration.

Top Tip

Include colors and items that you already own in your mood board, to see how these will complement your new ideas. For example, by taking a photo of your kitchen chairs and sticking them onto a mood board you can see how they would fit with a new décor scheme. This is a good way to ensure you have a fluid style throughout your interiors.

It’s all about experimenting with different styles, colors and textures before you buy. The great thing about designing in this way is that it’s very relaxing and there’s no pressure to buy anything when you’re browsing at home. This makes it’s easy to experiment and try out different combinations that you otherwise might not have considered if you were out shopping.

If you don’t have time to do it the old-fashioned way, try using Pinterest as a digital mood board to collate your ideas.
