A splash of greenery can make all the difference to a room. Plants add colour, texture and focal points, as well as providing health benefits. They have a calming effect and can purify the air around you.
There’s a plant for every kitchen. You’ll need to think about your kitchen layout; where the natural light is; where you have space; the temperature of your room; and how green-fingered you are. Here are some of our favourite house plants.
Aloe Vera
This is a great plant for kitchens. It purifies the air, and the gel from the aloe plant has soothing benefits if you burn yourself. It’s quite a compact plant and is low-maintenance, but it does love bright light. A word of warning though, keep it away from children and pets as it’s toxic when eaten.
Lavender
With its calming scent and soothing colour, a lavender plant is a classic choice. It also repels flies, so handy in the summer months. Lavender plants need plenty of sunlight – a warm position in summer, and a cooler but bright position in winter. There are many varieties, so choose one suitable for indoors and for your needs.
Dragon Tree
If you’ve got an empty corner, fill it with a dragon tree! Its spiky leaves look great in a modern kitchen, and as it’s a slim, upward growing plant it works well in smaller spaces. Keep out of direct sunlight, and don’t overwater.
Peace Lily
A popular houseplant, the peace lily displays cheerful and fresh bright white blooms. It makes a perfect centrepiece for your dining table or kitchen island, not least because it should be kept out of direct sunlight. It’ll keep your air nice and clean too as it removes toxins. It is poisonous to pets though.
String of Pearls
This trailing succulent is easy to look after. It doesn’t need much watering and is happy in a mix of light and shade. Hanging plants bring an extra dimension to your room and draw the eye.
Venus Fly Trap
This is a fun and quirky little plant, with the red and green hues adding to its exotic appearance. And, of course, it catches flies! It’s compact and low-lying, so you’re sure to find a small space for it. It likes a bit of humidity and plenty of water.
Spider Plant
A spider plant adds texture and movement. It’s happy in any position, temperature or light and looks great in a hanging plant pot or on top of units. It’s low-maintenance and can live for years.
Snake Plant
The sleek and striking leaves of the snake plant will look great in a modern kitchen. It’s compact, grows upwards, and will thrive in a variety of light conditions.
