As an effective solution for food storage, pantries come in all shapes and sizes. Whether you have a small cupboard or a large walk-in space, here are our top tips for creating a functional, stylish pantry.
Save space
Dedicate a unit to be converted to a pantry. Even in small rooms, it’s possible to include a pantry. A narrow space at the end of a run of units is ideal, as is a corner unit.
Prime position
Whether cooking or unloading your groceries, having all your food in one area of the room will make the task easier. Try and have the pantry close to the fridge and freezer.
Easy access
Being able to see and reach all the items in your pantry is important. Losing items at the back, or coming across jars that expired years ago, is frustrating, so try and create an opening that shows the entire space.
Go large
If you have a small utility room, turn it into a pantry by putting up some shelves. You could even add storage by moving a freestanding bookcase in there. A worktop area is handy, with drawers underneath that can store larger food items, and shelves higher up the wall for jars, bottles and containers.
Show off…
As well as being practical, a pantry can be good looking too. Make a feature of a large cabinet by having glass doors – smoked or ribbed glass looks particularly stylish – to display nice bottles and jars.
Or hide away…
Keep the kitchen look cohesive and use a tall unit to conceal a pantry, so a run of doors isn’t interrupted. Behind the door, choose your style. Swing-out or pull-out shelves make it easy to grab your ingredients. Or mix and match shelving options with some spice racks, veg drawers and open shelves.
