How to Feng Shui Your Bedroom

It’s important to start and end each day feeling comfortable and at peace. Introducing feng shui to your bedroom can help bring a sense of harmony, tranquillity and positive energy to one of the most important rooms in your home.

Find out how to feng shui your bedroom and create the ideal sleep sanctuary with our interior design tips below.

What is bedroom feng shui?

Feng shui is the ancient Chinese practice of designing and arranging your home to help encourage balance, comfort and positive energy. In Chinese, feng means wind, and shui means water – two symbols that represent movement, energy and life.

Incorporating feng shui into your bedroom can help you do more than improve the arrangement and organisation of your sleeping space. It can also help encourage healthier habits, so you can create a dedicated retreat for rest and relaxation.

Feng shui rules for positioning your bed

When following feng shui rules in the bedroom, the first step is to consider the position of your bed.

  • Arrange your bed in a central command position – meaning that when you’re lying in bed, you’ll be facing but not directly in line with the door.
  • Allow access from each side of the bed where possible.
  • Position the bed against a solid wall, rather than a window. According to feng shui, the external energy from the window can be distracting for sleep.

1. Get a strong headboard

As the place where you begin and end each day, your bed is somewhere you should always feel safe, secure and comfortable. A headboard can help establish supportive energy, encouraging balance and symmetry.

Whether you’re designing a modern bedroom look or something more traditional, make sure your headboard is securely attached to the primary bedroom wall.

2. Create a symmetrical layout

Symmetry is a key principle of feng shui. Make your bedroom a calm and balanced space by arranging furniture with symmetry in mind.

  • Add bedside tables on both sides of the bed. While they don’t have to match, they should complement one another in style.
  • Keeping items in pairs, add a lamp to each bedside table and ensure an equal number of pillows.
  • If you have wooden floors, place a rug beneath your bed to ground the space and add a touch of warmth and softness.

3. Avoid clutter under your bed

Tidy bedroom, tidy mind. The space beneath your bed might seem like the ideal place for bedroom storage, but it’s important to consider what you store under there.

According to feng shui, clutter can invite negative energy and restless nights. If possible, it’s best to keep the space under your bed clear. That way, energy – also known as chi – can flow freely through the room.

If you’re low on storage, consider decluttering your under-bed space and keeping only soft bedding and blankets.

4. Less is more

One of the best feng shui tips for your bedroom is to follow a minimalist approach. Minimalist bedrooms evoke a calm and organised atmosphere, which is why many principles overlap.

  • Limit what items sit on your bedside tables and drawers – clear surfaces can help encourage openness, clarity and positive energy.
  • Avoid over-furnishing your bedroom by removing any unnecessary items.
  • Consider practical closet organisation solutions, so everything has a place.

5. Cut out distractions

Remove anything that will distract from sleep. Excess books, electronics and work items can bring too much active energy into your bedroom.

  • Rather than keeping piles of books or bookshelves in your bedroom, only keep the books you’re currently reading in your bedside storage.
  • Consider an alarm clock, rather than using your phone as an alarm.
  • The same applies to TVs and exercise equipment. Your bedroom is a place for rest and sleep, so it’s best to keep distractions to a minimum.

6. Introduce soft details and colours

Create a quiet and inviting space designed for relaxation by introducing quality materials and soothing colours. Consider neutral colour palettes, gentle fabrics, cosy bedding and supportive pillows.

Essentially, add features that make you look forward to climbing into bed each night and melting into your mattress. Keep to a particular colour scheme for harmony – whether that’s with crisp, white, hotel-inspired bedding, warm beige tones, or shades of soft blue.

7. Be mindful of mirrors

Mirrors can help make rooms feel more open and spacious, bouncing light across the walls. But when it comes to feng shui, bedroom mirror placement is an important area to get right.

Reflective surfaces like mirrors can alter the energy of a room based on their location. Avoid placing mirrors in front of your bed, as this can be too direct. Instead, position them somewhere they can reflect positive things like trees, plants and art.

8. Add natural light and plants

Inspire a sense of peace and vitality by introducing nature and natural light into your bedroom.

Keep your curtains and blinds open during the day to flood your bedroom with natural light. Cracking open a window and letting the fresh air uplift your space can help encourage chi and energy flow too.

Meanwhile, adding one or two living plants can also make your space feel more positive and rejuvenating, adding a pop of colour. Flowering plants like orchids and peace lilies are good choices.

9. Set the mood with lighting and scents

Direct light is great for practical organisation and chores, but when it’s time to relax, make sure your bedroom has soft lighting to help you wind down. Create a soothing ambience with lamps on each side of the bed.

Feng shui targets a range of senses, and scent can also trigger feelings of calm and well-being. Feel cosy and at peace in your bedroom with gentle essential oils – from lavender to ylang ylang and jasmine.
