Boys’ Bedroom Ideas

As with designing any bedroom, when it comes to boys’ bedroom décor, you have a lot of space, furniture, and colour options to work with. In fact, not only do you need to consider how their room will look, but also what it will be used for. After all, a boys’ bedroom is as much a playroom as it is a place to sleep.

So, whether your boys are excited to paint their shared space, or your eldest child is finally getting their own room, we’ve broken down everything you’ll need to consider when coming up with ideas for boys’ bedrooms.

What should you think about with boys’ bedroom décor?

Defined by bold and exciting colours, classically boyish furniture designs, and a liberal sprinkling of storage space, a boys’ bedroom needs to be capable of handling the rough and tumble that comes with play, while also being reflective of their personality.

So, first things first, you should ask your kids – if they’re old enough – what they want their bedroom to look like. This is as much their space as yours, and you want to be sure they like the style and dressings that you pick.

Once you’ve had a little brainstorm, you can then go through all the areas listed below to settle on the final design.

Start by choosing your boy’s room colour

Perhaps the biggest factor in selecting how the other features of your boy’s room will look, choosing the right colour is very important. Naturally, you could go for a traditional blue hue, but there are so many other colour options you can choose from.

For one thing, a moodier, monochrome shading might be just the ticket for your child as they enter their teenage years, while a combination of bright or neutral colours with an appropriate wallpaper is a common choice for younger boys who want to embody their favourite hobbies and colours.

However, the one colour we would avoid is white, as this is likely to get scuffed and dirty very quickly.

Choosing a theme

Anyone with kids probably knows just how much their children love a theme. So, whether your boy is really into space, or is fascinated by dinosaurs and nature, a smart way to style their room is to base your colour and wallpaper choice on whatever interests them the most.

Of course, you should be careful about how you go about bringing this themed choice to life, especially if your child is young. Boys’ tastes are only going to change as they grow up, which is why we suggest a more neutral paint and wallpaper combo, which are much easier to redecorate than a wall covered in artistically stencilled stars and moons.

Picking your boys’ bedroom furniture

Once you’ve settled on how the walls and floor of your boy’s bedroom are going to look, the next step is to choose the furniture to go with it. Naturally, what you choose will depend on your child’s age and hobbies, so again, try to involve them in this process.

As for key furniture pieces, you’re going to need a bed – a large and comfy single if it’s their own room or an appropriately dramatic bunk bed if they’re sharing – and plenty of storage. This storage should also be slipped out of site where possible and you should make liberal use of shelves.

Unique pieces of boys’ bedroom furniture

Besides bed and storage units, there are plenty of other furniture pieces you can pick to add flavour to your boy’s bedroom. Beanbags, bookcases, a desk and chair, in-built wardrobes, and under-bed trunks are all absolutely essential, and they can all easily be matched to the room’s colour for a consistent theme.

On top of these, you might also want to consider picking a raised bed or converting a walkthrough wardrobe into a sleeping area or play den. That way, you save on space to play, and their function can be changed as your child gets older.

We go into more detail on this area in our kids’ bedroom ideas blog.

Let your boy’s artistic side out

With colour and furniture out of the way, the last thing to consider is what additional decorations and imagery you want hanging from the bedroom walls. And if your child hasn’t given too much input up until now, this is where they can really lean into making this room their own.

For younger children, let them pick posters and wall stickers of their favourite celebrities and fictional characters, and use smart storage to position toys and books in eye-catching positions.

As for older children, consider framing their favourite pictures so they don’t get damaged, and take the time to help them hang any artwork or posters that they want on display.

Creative ideas for boys’ bedrooms at different ages

Much like your own tastes, as your boys grow up, their preferences and style choices are going to change, which means so too will the décor of their bedroom. So, here’s a little insight into how to style boys’ rooms at different ages.

Baby boy bedroom ideas

When it comes to baby boy bedroom ideas, you’ll want to take a slightly more laid-back approach to your design. So, while you can pick a traditional bedroom style, neutral, pale hues, and whites are much more appropriate, and give you the opportunity to decorate the walls in interesting ways to catch your child’s attention.

You also don’t need to worry about making too much space for playing in these early years. So long as you can fit a cot and storage space in for your child’s clothes, you don’t need to worry about much else. Of course, the addition of plants and plenty of light never hurts.

Teenage boy bedroom ideas

As your child grows older, their tastes are naturally going to change, meaning you’ll need to think about adapting their room to meet their needs. This will likely mean making more room for a work desk and chair, as well as a dedicated hobby space.

For small boys’ bedroom ideas, focus on practical ways to get the most out of the space with the most essential pieces of furniture. And for large rooms, consider adding a sofa and TV if they’re into movies and gaming, for when they have friends over.

Uni-sex bedrooms for boys

When it comes to unisex bedrooms for boys, you don’t so much have to focus on the furniture as much as the colour of the walls and the materials you use.

Most uni-sex rooms favour a neutral colour palette, with splashes of muted and pale yellow and greens as accents, and can also really benefit from the use of wood as a focal point for furniture and floor material.
