La Tomatina!

Three tomato-inspired recipes to celebrate the Spanish festival

As dedicated food-lovers you can imagine our delight when we heard about La Tomatina, the annual tomato-throwing festival in Spain’s Valencia region. The event is held on the last Wednesday of August, and promises a messy, colourful explosion of fruit and fireworks throughout the day and well into the evening!

Since we can’t make it to the festival ourselves, we decided to put together our own collection of tomato-based recipes, so you can at least celebrate the occasion – just avoid throwing food inside the house!

PATATAS BRAVAS

Bowl of Patatas Bravas

If you’re looking for a new side dish or even an addition to your tapas collection, you can’t go wrong with the classic patatas bravas – a delicious dish of fried potatoes served with a spicy tomato sauce and plenty of seasoning! In this version The Vegan Project makes good use of garlic and Tabasco sauce for a beautifully deep and rich tomato sauce – ideal with salad and steak for dinner!

PAN CON TOMATE

Pan Con Tomate on Chopping Board

Wake up the Spanish way with this brilliant traditional breakfast dish that can be prepared the night before with minimal effort. Comprising simply of a tomato salsa and thickly-sliced bread, this is all about the quality of the ingredients – and the beautiful recipe from Chef In You makes the most of it with a few excellent optional extras!

TOMATO AND CHORIZO PAELLA

Tomato and Chorizo Paella

For a warming, filling dish that’ll impress the whole family, give this paella recipe from Pinch My Salt a go – with plenty of spice and rich flavours you can be certain of a truly Spanish dish, complete with paprika and soft garlic notes. An absolute must to celebrate La Tomatina on Wednesday 28th!
